Professional Practice

Hello there! My name is Akash Peeroo and for nearly 10 years I have been creating visual content for brands in both digital and print. While some may define me as a multidisciplinary designer/hybrid designer/graphic designer or even visual artist, I think of myself as a creator with a fluid process that focuses on art direction for effective communication.

My design practice allowed me to work with clients from different backgrounds – from artists to small and medium enterprises. I pride myself on building meaningful relationships with my clients through a commitment to truly understand their requirements and goals rather than providing them with a one-size-fits-all solution. The advantage of working directly with me is that it helps in eliminating any noise that may occur during the exchange of ideas.

As a multidisciplinary designer, I have been able to explore various techniques of production - from traditional to digital methods.  This provides me with enough freedom for different creative outcomes.  Throughout my 10 years of experience in the design field, I have worked for and with various organisations such as RTC, AAWM Services, Zethical, and United Docks amongst others. During the past decade, I have occupied different roles; ranging from senior designer to creative head which helped me to hone my skills in art direction, typography, 3D graphics, editorial design, and, brand identity design as well as improving my hands-on problem-solving capabilities.

My design practice, through its multiple disciplinary influences, cannot be neatly classified; and is now a mixture of technology, visual arts, and design.  This approach, informed by design theory and research, enables me to think conceptually rather than being a specialist executor.

Teaching Experience

While working as a freelance designer, I have also been teaching Graphic Design for over three years at Curtin Mauritius and the University of Technology of Mauritius. My role as a lecturer includes the preparation of class content and delivery for various units such as typography (introductory and advanced units), packaging design, brand identity design, editorial design, advertising, to name but a few.

The delivery of classes is mostly conducted via two types of sessions: lectures and workshops where students are guided through the design process to investigate production methods and potential solutions to fulfill brief requirements.

The branding units teach students about brand strategy, visual development, and the brand rollout. While establishing the strategy, students are introduced to market segments and the visual development focuses on identifying visual languages and forms that reflect the audience.
Typography units range from the basic understanding of form to the identification of type structure.  In advanced units, students are introduced to grid systems and how to apply the various design principles to achieve desired aesthetic outcomes.

While each unit usually has limitations and specificities, design principles are still being used throughout various assignments to provide students with knowledge on the ways of adapting designs to different mediums.

Education Background

After graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Graphic Design with Advertising and Photography from Curtin University Australia, I worked as a print designer before transitioning to digital design.  Five years later, I enrolled in a Masters of Arts in Graphic Communication from the University of Hertfordshire where I explored 3D solutions as a means of communication for both print and digital environments.  This gave me the chance to diversify my skills and knowledge to explore 3D image production, art direction, storytelling and visual communication to meet various clients’ needs. Throughout this master’s degree, I have had the chance to discuss and collaborate with international professionals from different industry sectors. This enabled me to develop problem-solving skills, conceptual thinking skills and to communicate ideas to audiences with different backgrounds.

What can I do?

Art direction ensures that there is a consistent look and feel to your overall project and it aligns your brand values to your business goals.  Art direction combines visual representations and language to strengthen your brand’s meaning. Design is the outcome of this desire and not the effect of it.  While art direction makes use of artistic techniques, its main purpose is to create a visual experience by an amalgamation of form and function.  It is more than finding a good looking image; art direction is about understanding semiotics, composition, light, production techniques, written and visual narrative, and art just to name a few.
