Project background
How to represent minimalist architecture through an aesthetic display font?
How to translate architecture design through forms that provide some level of legibility while maintaining a level of aesthetics?
As the project title implies, this project’s outcome is to design a display font that reflects minimal architecture design. This was translated through the use of thick and thin lines.
The approach
The first step was to research minimal display fonts. Various typefaces were analysed and deconstructed. Following this, an exploration through minimal architecture was crucial to study lines, forms, shapes, and textures.
It resulted in a visual mood board, created to help with the project development. The mood board assisted in keeping the focus on certain aspects of the project such as colour, negative space (which is widely used in minimal design), and layout.
Every display font has a specific personality and careful considerations had to be taken for this specific project to stand out. The main characteristic of the font was to remain minimal while being suitable for modern architecture. Research showed that most designs related to minimalism reflect high contrast of both shapes and colour.
Texture is another feature that is widely used in architecture. The overall idea was to reflect all the features of minimal architecture through this particular display font. While being used as a standalone (no images) display font, it should also be legible and work in synergy with images.
